Who is Michelle?

I'm Michelle, and I'm thrilled to welcome you to Ashkelachian, a celebration of food, identity, and heritage. But let's rewind a bit.

In 2022, I found myself reflecting on my journey of self-discovery amidst the chaos of the world. I realized there was one aspect of myself I hadn't fully explored: my Jewish identity and heritage.

Born into a Jewish family in the heart of the Appalachian South, my upbringing was a unique blend of cultures and flavors. Yet, for too long, I'd overlooked the rich tapestry of Ashkenazi and Appalachian cuisines that shaped my identity. That's when the idea for Ashkelachian was born.

Drawing inspiration from my roots and fueled by a passion for storytelling, I am embarking on a culinary adventure. Armed with recipes passed down through generations and a healthy dose of curiosity, join me as I dive into the kitchen, determined to unearth the hidden gems of both sides of my heritage.

More about Ashkelachian cooking

Ashkelachian has emerged as a fusion of flavors and traditions, a culinary journey that transcends borders and defies expectations. From traditional Ashkenazi dishes to Appalachian staples, each recipe tells a story—a story of resilience, pride, and the shared experience of breaking challah (or cornbread) with loved ones.

But this site will be more than just recipes. It's a celebration of community, a space where curiosity reigns supreme and kindness is the secret ingredient. Whether you're a seasoned chef or a kitchen novice, there's a place for you at our table.

What can you expect?

Recipes that honor tradition while embracing innovation. Essays that delve into the stories behind the dishes. And, above all, authenticity—the unfiltered, unapologetic expression of who I am and where I come from.

So, grab your apron and pull up a chair. There's a feast waiting to be shared, and I can't wait to have you join me at the table. Mazel, bbs 💋

With love and latkes,

Michelle
